Madres

Madres – “The Mexican Get Out!” – will leave horror buffs thrilled and philanthropists speechless!

In the film, Tenoch Huerta (Beto) and Arianna Guerra (Diana), a young Mexican American couple, expect their first child. His father offers him a job managing a farm in 1970s California, where they move. While exploring the rundown ranch where they live, plagued by nightmares and isolated from the community, Diana discovers a grisly talisman and a box of their belongings. It will reveal truths she could never have predicted, and they will be horrifying.

In addition to being a great movie for any horror movie buff, this movie has a very specific aim and addresses a very specific social impact. In the movie, the main character is pregnant and begins having extreme hallucinations, that are perceived to be from the town curse that targets expectant mothers.

As the movie progresses Diana discovers that there is much more involved with what is plaguing the women of her small community. As a writer herself, she sets off on a mission to find out exactly what is going on. The closer she gets to the truth the more dangerous her life becomes. It’s the scariest thing when you think the people who are helping you are actually there to bring you great harm.

The socially impactful topic is not widely known and therefore teaches the viewers something. It’s a really scary thing to find out what happens is actually factual. It hits very close to home for the writers and people living in LA. Not many know of Eugenics, but the truth is terrifying.

For those who don't know, Eugenics is the study of how to arrange reproduction within a human population in order to increase the occurrence of desirable traits. Eugenics was primarily established by Sir Francis Galton as a way to improve human breeding. It was increasingly discredited, especially after the Nazis adopted its doctrines in order to justify their treatment of Jews, disabled people, and other community groups.

Not many know that things such as this are still going on in our own backyard. The movie takes a shocking twist towards the end when it tells of what horrors are really going on behind closed doors.

Overall this movie will keep you intrigued and on the edge of your seat, not to mention will shed some light on unspeakable tragedies happening in our own communities.

After the premiere of the film which I attended, there was a Q&A with the cast members that attended. With Arianna Guerra calling the movie the “Mexican Get Out!” which for anyone horror movie buff who is familiar with Jordan Peele’s Get Out! really helps set the tone for this movie!

This month, Amazon Prime will release four new horror movies – including Madres – as part of their “Welcome to the Blumhouse” collection. Don't miss this fascinating film, which premieres on October 8th.
